Al O'Neill passed away February 5, 2006 in his home town of Fremont. Coach O'Neill came to Avon Lake in 1966 and coached here for 12 years, leading the Shoremen to their first six SWC Championships. He then left coaching for six years but returned to coach Lakewood St. Edwards, taking them to numerous playoff games including a Division I State Title game in 1986. Al was inducted into the Avon Lake Hall of Fame in 1985 and then into the Ohio High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1999. His overall coaching record was 150-57-8.

The Shoremen's current run of success traces directly back to Coach O’Neill. Coach Dlugosz is an O'Neill protege. Dave played for Al in the 60's and coached under him for years, even following him to St. Edward in the 80's as an assistant.
