The Shoremen
scored early and often, running up over 300 yards of offense in the first half
alone, as they trounced Westlake
by a 55-14 count. Mike Haddad scored
three TD’s, Jeff Tell rushed for 120 yards, and Nick Firment dissected the
Demon’s secondary with eight completions in ten attempts. Both Westlake
scores and most of their rushing yardage came against the Shoremen reserves long
after the outcome had been determined.
Avon Lake received the kickoff and started from their 27 yard
line. Haddad’s 13 yard touchdown run
capped the 73 yard, eight play drive which featured Firment passes of 14 yards
to Dan Weimer and 21 yards to Scott Shaffer.
Joe Prendergast kicked the first of his five PAT’s for a 7-0 lead. A quick three and out put the offense back in
business, again starting at their own 27.
This time it took 11 plays to cover the 73 yards, with Haddad cashing in
from the one to build the margin to 14-0.
A roughing the passer penalty gave Westlake their initial first down,
but the Shoremen “D” stopped them cold and the Demons faced 4th
& 10 at their 40 as the quarter ended.
Westlake punted the ball to the Avon Lake
29 to start the second quarter. After a
long pass intended for Ryan Scherer was incomplete on first down, Haddad picked
up 18 on a fullback counter over the left side of the Shoremen line. Firment came right back with another bomb to
Scherer, and this time Ryan pulled in the perfect throw for a gain of 38 to the
Westlake
15. Firment and Scherer hooked up again
for a first down on 3rd and 8, and
two runs up the middle by Haddad covered the last four yards for a 21-0
lead. The Demons managed one first down
on their next possession, but punted again, this time into a gusty wind that
knocked the ball down at the Shoremen 45.
On third down a muffed pitch was
recovered by the Demons and their offense went to work at midfield. Westlake was
flagged for a 15 yards unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, then a desperation pass
on 3rd and 23 was picked off by Kevin Mansnerus and Avon Lake
took over at their 27 once again.
Firment hit Weimer for twenty yards, Tell ran for four, and then Nick
found Shaffer over the middle for another 10.
Tell ran 23 yards off left tackle
to the 16, then finished the drive on the nest play as he broke over the right side and cut back up
the middle. The point after made the
score 28-0 at the half.
Things didn’t
improve for Westlake
after the break. Three plays after
receiving the kickoff, they faced 4th & 22 from their seven yard
line. Scherer fielded a poor punt at the
30 and brought it back to the 25. Tell
carried it in from the nine four plays later to extend the lead to 34-0. Three plays after the kickoff, Cody
Bennington recovered a Demon fumble at the 27.
Pete Hart took over at quarterback and wasted no time, hooking up with
Sean Oxley, who made a nice leaping catch in traffic and sprinted in for
six. The kick was good and the score
stood 41-0 with less than five minutes gone in the third period. Westlake
picked up one first down, then punted for just 12 yards to set up the Shoremen
at the Demon 45. After a couple runs by Steve Mares, Shaffer raced 36 yards on a pitch to the
right. Nick Gamellia booted the point
and it was 48-0 after three quarters.
Westlake put together a nice drive against the Shoremen
reserves, marching 75 yards in 11 plays and consuming over 8 minutes. Jimmy Abed ran it in from the five to cut the
lead to 48-7. The Shoremen fumbled away
the kickoff, and Westlake
recovered at the 18. It took the just
three plays to reach the end zone and
make it a 48-14 game with 4:46 left.
Mike Mansnerus capped the scoring a couple minutes later on a 32 yards
burst down the left sideline. Gamellia’s
extra point made the final score 55-14
Notes:
·
With his three
touchdowns against Westlake,
Haddad raised his total for the year to 23.
·
Tell carried 16
times for 120 yards. Jeff needs just 73
yards to join Mike in the thousand yard club.
·
With Piqua and Sylvania Southview both losing, the Shoremen
have the inside track to finish first in Region 6 with a win next Friday at Amherst. Avon helped
out tonight with a 14-12 upset over N. Ridgeville to add an unexpected 5.5
level two points to the Shoremen’s total.
If Avon and Dover win next week, which seems likely, Piqua and Toledo
Central Catholic would need all of their
level two games to go their way. If
Elyria could somehow come up with a win over Lakewood, that would seal the deal
for the Shoremen.
·
Last but not
least, Avon Lake has clinched a share of the SWC
crown. A victory next week will give the
Shoremen the title outright.
