The Shoremen bounced back after an impressive opening drive by Midview and totally dominated the rest of the game for a convincing 50-13 win in the opening round of the playoffs.  Avon Lake gained over 500 total yards, with the trio of Jeff Tell (194 yards rushing), Mike Haddad (124 yards on the ground) and Nick Firment (197 passing yards) accounting for most of the damage.  Jeff and Mike each ran for a couple of scores and Nick threw for three.

Avon Lake kicked off to start the game.  Midview returned the kick to the 37 as the Shoremen kick coverage unit, which has been stellar all year, had a series of breakdowns which gave the Middies good field position to start quite a few of their drives.  Midview converted a pass on 3rd & 13 to keep their drive alive, and QB Adam Koubek hit three more passes, the last on 4th & 7 from the 28 for a touchdown.  The 10-play drive consumed the first five and a half minutes of the game and gave the middies a 7-0 lead.  The Shoremen started from their 26 after the kickoff, and need just four plays to erase the deficit.  Firment found Ryan Scherer for 34 yards to the Midview 40.  A personal foul at the end of the play moved the ball to the 25.   Haddad ran for four yards, and then Sean Oxley pulled in a sweet pass from Firment for a 21 yard TD.  Joe Prendergast tied the score with his kick.  Midview again found a gap in the kick coverage, returning the ball out to their own 46.  But the Shoremen defense suddenly got very stingy, and the Middies went three and out.   Starting this time from their 23, Haddad broke a counter for 32 yards to the Midview 41.  An incompletion and a short gain led to 3rd & 9,  but Tell carried off left tackle for 10 yards and a first down.  Tell ran a toss sweep to the right down to the 18, where Firment found Joe Gaydosh by himself in the end zone for his first varsity TD and a 14-7 lead as the quarter ended.

The second quarter was all Avon Lake.  After turning the ball over on downs on their first possession of the quarter, Dave Henderson recovered a fumble at the Middie 41.  Five runs advanced the ball to the 20, and Firment threw to Scherer for 16 more.  Haddad covered the last four yards up the gut to make it 21-7 with 2:14 to go until halftime.  Again the defense forced a punt, and Steve Mares had a nice 15 yard return to start the Shoremen at their 47 with 1:16 to go in the half. Firment threw to Weimer for a first down at the 40, then Tell gained nine on a counter.  The Shoremen took their last time out, and faced 2nd & 1 at the 31 with 26 seconds to go.  Needing to gain a few yards and have the clock stop while the chains moved (this is why Woody  invented the fullback;-), Firment handed the ball to Haddad over the left side.  Mike bounced outside, broke a tackle, and raced into the end zone to make the halftime margin 28-7.

Mike Mansnerus returned the second half kickoff to the A.L. 32.  Tell gained eight on a powerful off-tackle run then Firment found Scherer for 10 yards.  After a five yard penalty and an incompletion, Tell ran for 14 on a toss sweep to the left, and Haddad carried to the 35 for a first down.  Tell broke free over left tackle for a 35 yard TD, and a 35-7 lead.  Midview had another nice kick return, and moved to the Shoremen 40 where they faced fourth and one.  Koubek ran a keeper off the left side, broke through cleanly, and raced 40 yards for the score.  A failed PAT kick left the score 35-13 as the third period expired.  The fourth featured two more Shoremen TD’s, one on a 24 yards Firment to Weimer connection, and the other on an eight yard run by Tell.  Even when things when wrong they came out OK as Pete Hart couldn’t get the ball set for the PAT kick after Weimer’s touchdown, but outran the Middie defense for two points.
