The Shoremen
celebrated Senior Parents Night with a 56-7 thumping of an outmanned Berea
Braves team. Eight different Shoremen
scored as the absence of starter Jeff Tell led to a “tailback by committee”
approach. Steve Mares, Scott Shaffer,
and brothers Kevin and Mike Mansnerus shared the
duties, with Mares scoring two TD’s and the other three accounting for one
each. Backup QB Pete Hart threw his
first varsity touchdown pass to senior wideout Bryce Alurovic, who also scored
for the first time. Joe Prendergast and
Nick Gamellia each went four for four on extra point kicks, and even sophomore
backup holder T.J. Thompson got into the action, holding on Gamellia’s last
boot.
Kevin Mansnerus
got the game off to a thrilling start as he broke out of the pack and returned
the opening kickoff to the Braves fifteen yard line. But the refs, who dominated the game in the
early going, flagged Avon
Lake for a illegal block and the Shoremen started from their 22. Dan Weimer made a beautiful diving catch of a
bomb from Nick Firment on the first play from scrimmage to move the ball to the
Berea 43. A couple plays later Nick hit Ryan Scherer on
the left sideline and Ryan zigzagged his way through the Braves secondary into
the end zone. Again the play was called
back for a blocking infraction, but the Shoremen overcame a 3rd and
long situation on a 20 yard run by Kevin Mansnerus on a counter off jet
action. A few plays later, Mike Haddad
powered in from eight yards out.
Prendergast’s kick made it 7-0 Shoremen just three minutes into the
game. The defense forced a punt, but
another penalty halted the Shoremen offense.
Andy Howell's punt was downed at the Berea 10, and again the Braves were unable to
generate any offense. This time the
Shoremen marched down quickly and cashed in on a 14 yard Mares run for a 14-0
lead at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was played entirely in Berea’s end of the field. The Braves only offensive production came
from their quarterback who a some nice scrambling runs
after eluding the Shoremen pass rush.
Mares scored another TD on a seven yard run, and Kevin Mansnerus, playing
his natural tailback position for the first time this year, never skipped a
beat as he cashed
in on a 33 yard sprint. Two more
Prendergast PAT’s made the halftime score 28-0.
The second half
opened with a thunderous hit by Mike Mansnerus on the kickoff. Berea
went three and out, and a couple of Firment passes, to Scherer and Eric Cail,
put the ball at the Braves 28. Haddad
broke loose from there for his second touchdown of the game and Gamellia booted
the extra point for a 35-0 lead. Berea fumbles gave the
home team a short field on the next two series as Coach Dlugosz started getting
his subs into the game. Hart hit
Alurovic with a short pass on the right sideline, and Bryce broke a tackle and
outran the rest of the defense into the end zone. After the second Braves fumble, Shaffer got his
turn at tailback as he broke though a big hole to the right and cruised
untouched for a 35 yard TD. The score
was 49-0 after three quarters. Berea finally got
untracked and put together a nice 60 yard drive, all on the ground, for their
only score of the game. The Shoremen
reserves, with Mike Mansnerus now at tailback, put on a fine drive of their
own, with Mike sweeping the left side for his 25 yard touchdown. Gamellia’s fourth straight PAT made the final
score 56-7.
Notes:
·
Haddad’s two TD’s
bring his season total to 20, and his 89 yards on 2 carries gives him 1,120
rushing yards this year.
·
Eight different
ball carriers accounted for 342 rushing yards for the Shoremen.
·
With Olentangy
Liberty losing to Sunbury Big Walnut Friday night, the Shoremen are firmly in
control of their own playoff destiny and can clinch a
home game with wins over Westlake and Amherst.
